The composition is centered and vertical, dominated by rigorous, high-contrast typography that ranges from heavy, authoritative serif headings to finer, dense paragraphs of secondary text. The clear hierarchy draws the eye immediately to the publisher’s name and location, Arnhem, anchored by the specific year of publication. This is a study in Victorian-era printing style, where the spacing and alignment of the characters create an orderly, intellectual tension across the surface.

Meaning & Historical Context

This document captures a pivotal moment in the history of Dutch media and political communication. The text addresses the zegel—or stamp duty—a tax imposed on newspapers and printed matter that acted as a barrier to the mass dissemination of information. By documenting the proposal for its abolition, the design represents the 19th-century push toward a more accessible, liberalized press. It stands as a physical artifact of the struggle to decouple journalism from state-sanctioned financial gatekeeping, marking a shift toward the modern era of public discourse.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

As a kiss-cut decal, this design is precisely contoured to the silhouette of the historical document, isolating the stark typography from its original context. The sticker format transforms a dense, bureaucratic archival page into a portable, sharp graphic. Because the decal is cut to follow the specific edges of the design, the historical text becomes a clean, standalone emblem that can be placed on journals or laptops to highlight an interest in print history, typography, or the evolution of free speech.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/dirk-anthonie-thieme-arnhem-de-voorgestelde-afschaffing-van-het-zegel-op-gedrukte-stukken-1867-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-DRKNTH-2X2-14D6P-alt-3.webp?v=1788637010
https://thestickerspace.com/products/dirk-anthonie-thieme-arnhem-de-voorgestelde-afschaffing-van-het-zegel-op-gedrukte-stukken-1867-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
