Coornhert, Haarlem - Jakob zegent de zonen van Jozef - c. 1549 - STICKER Vinyl Kiss-Cut Decal
Jakob Zegent de Zonen van Jozef - Kiss-Cut Sticker Design

This design features Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert’s 1549 etching, capturing the biblical patriarch Jakob as he performs a final blessing upon his grandsons, Ephraim and Manasseh.

Composition and Line Work

The scene is defined by the sharp, rhythmic incisions characteristic of sixteenth-century printmaking, prioritizing gestural intensity over painterly color. Jakob occupies the central foreground, his aged, slumped frame contrasted against the structured, standing figures of Jozef and his sons. The artist employs dense cross-hatching to create deep, dark shadows within the folds of heavy robes and the surrounding architecture, while the faces and hands remain illuminated by fine, delicate strokes. The composition is contained within a tightly balanced frame, emphasizing the physical connection between the patriarch’s hands and the heads of the kneeling youths.

Historical Significance

Originating from the Dutch Renaissance, this work reflects the period’s fascination with classical humanism fused with theological narrative. Coornhert, a polymath and engraver, utilizes this moment of patriarchal transmission to explore themes of lineage, authority, and divine favor. The scene functions as a masterclass in narrative tension, where the deliberate crossing of Jakob’s arms—bestowing the primary blessing upon the younger son, Ephraim—serves as the emotional and symbolic anchor of the entire image.

The Artwork as a Sticker

When translated into a kiss-cut sticker, this intricate etching sheds its rectangular frame to follow the contours of the figures themselves. This extraction turns a dense, historical print into a singular, portable silhouette, highlighting the expressive anatomy of Coornhert’s draftsmanship. Because the design is cut to the edge of the artwork, the composition sits starkly against whatever surface you choose to adorn, allowing the complexity of the sixteenth-century lines to stand out as a bold, graphic element in your personal collection.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/dirck-volckertsz-coornhert-haarlem-jakob-zegent-de-zonen-van-jozef-c-1549-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-DRCVLC-2X2-51-alt-3.webp?v=1788636155
https://thestickerspace.com/products/dirck-volckertsz-coornhert-haarlem-jakob-zegent-de-zonen-van-jozef-c-1549-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
