Coornhert , Haarlem - Eerste voorwendsel_ de nieuwe akker - 1558 - 1559 - STICKER Vinyl Kiss-Cut Decal
Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert, Haarlem – Eerste voorwendsel: De nieuwe akker - Kiss-Cut Sticker Design

This design reproduces the intricate 1558–1559 engraving Eerste voorwendsel: de nieuwe akker by the Dutch humanist Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert, depicting a complex landscape of laborers and agrarian transformation.

Visual Elements & Composition

The composition is defined by the dense, cross-hatched linework typical of 16th-century Northern Renaissance printmaking. It centers on an expansive field where figures engage in the methodical work of tilling and preparing the earth. Sharp, deliberate lines carve out the textures of the soil, the architectural silhouettes in the middle ground, and the flowing garments of the workers. The layout prioritizes depth, drawing the eye from the foreground activities toward a distant horizon where the sky and rolling topography meet.

Meaning & Symbolism

Representing the philosophical and practical shift toward the "new field," this piece captures the spirit of 16th-century Haarlem, where human industry intersects with the natural order. Coornhert, a man of letters and prolific printmaker, utilized these scenes to reflect the humanist belief in the dignity of labor and the refinement of the landscape. The imagery serves as a historical document of agricultural advancement and the methodical discipline that defined the era’s worldview.

On the Sticker

Because this design is rendered as a kiss-cut sticker, the complex, organic edges of the historical print are extracted from their original rectangular frame. This approach allows the intricate linework of Coornhert’s etching to exist as a free-floating silhouette, treating the dense historical composition as a singular, precise graphic object. Applying this sticker places a piece of Dutch Renaissance art onto your chosen surface as a clean, singular cut-out, highlighting the detail of the original engraving against your environment.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/dirck-volckertsz-coornhert-haarlem-eerste-voorwendsel-de-nieuwe-akker-1558-1559-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-DRCVLC-2X2-10-alt-3.webp?v=1788633409
https://thestickerspace.com/products/dirck-volckertsz-coornhert-haarlem-eerste-voorwendsel-de-nieuwe-akker-1558-1559-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
