The central element is a silver (argent) shield, the backdrop for a powerful and symbolic composition.

The Central Design: Symbols of Saint Catherine

At the heart of the design, a red, six-spoked "Richtrad" – a medieval execution wheel – dominates the visual space. This wheel, directly referencing the martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, is intricately detailed with fourteen curved iron-blue knives, adding a layer of visual complexity.

Piercing through the wheel is an upside-down (inverted) executioner’s sword, depicted in steel-colored tones with a golden hilt. This further emphasizes the association with Saint Catherine, as she is traditionally depicted with both the wheel and the sword.

Symbol of Identity: The Mural Crown

Above the shield, a red mural crown – a stylized city-wall crown with three towers – completes the design. The central tower is distinguished by a smaller shield, which displays the emblem of the city of Berlin. This integration clearly signifies Weißensee’s historical connection to Berlin, its former district status.

Meaning and Legacy

The overall design reflects the history of the Weißensee district, a borough of Berlin until 2000. The wheel and sword are direct visual references to the instruments associated with Saint Catherine, tying the design to a historical and religious narrative. The mural crown serves as a symbol of district status within the city of Berlin.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/deu-weiensee-district-coa-germany-coat-of-arms-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-2-inch-white-position1.webp?v=1764528620
https://thestickerspace.com/products/deu-weissensee-district-coa-germany-coat-of-arms-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
