The design is a vibrant representation of the region's rich history and complex allegiances.

Design Elements

The central element is the shield, meticulously divided and filled with potent symbols. At the top, a prominent continuous red cross against a silver (white) background dominates. This is the Cross of Trier, immediately signaling the historical influence of the Electorate and Archbishopric of Trier within the region.

Below, the shield is further divided. On the left side, against a gold (yellow) field, a red crayfish (or lobster) stands proudly. This design directly references the arms of the town of Bernkastel and honors Cardinal Nikolaus von Cusa, a notable local figure whose family name translates to “crab” or “crayfish.”

The right side presents two silver keys placed back-to-back on a red field. These are the Keys of St. Peter, derived from the arms of the city of Wittlich, and they represent St. Peter as patron saint of Trier, linking the district to ecclesiastical authority.

Finally, the base of the shield displays a pattern of red and silver (white) checks (chequy). This element symbolizes the historical connection to the County of Sponheim, a noble house with ties to towns like Traben-Trarbach found within the district.

Symbolism and Meaning

The design as a whole is a masterful compilation of regional history. It reflects the intertwined influences of the Electorate of Trier (the cross and keys) with noble regional families (the chequy) and celebrates local historical figures (the crayfish). The coat of arms, granted in 1971, expertly combines the symbolism of the formerly separate districts of Bernkastel and Wittlich, now unified under the modern Landkreis.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/deu-landkreis-bernkastel-wittlich-coa-germany-coat-of-arms-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-2-inch-white-position1.webp?v=1764525476
https://thestickerspace.com/products/deu-landkreis-bernkastel-wittlich-coa-germany-coat-of-arms-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
