Federal Battery Fording A Tributary Of The Rappahannock On The Day Of Battle (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Die-Cut Decal

A monochrome stereograph from the 1860s shows a line of horse-drawn wagons crossing a stream in Virginia, on the day of the fighting at Cedar Mountain.

Visual Elements & Composition

Light grey, charcoal and near-black tones make up the whole picture, with the water catching the pale highlights. Teams of horses are harnessed to the wagons, and covered wagons stand back in the distance while men move the column through the water. Large trees line the bank and frame the crossing. The panoramic horizontal frame gives the scene the width of the stream and the length of the train.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Battle of Cedar Mountain was fought in Virginia during the American Civil War, and this image records the logistics behind the fighting: the wagons, teams and men that kept an army moving. The stereograph format, with its paired frames, was a popular way to bring scenes of the war to parlours and libraries. The picture is solemn and matter-of-fact, showing the work of the campaign rather than its combat.

A Scene Across the Surface

The image suits a flat surface where its width can be seen in one look, and the die-cut outline lets the sticker follow the shape of the wagon train rather than the rectangle of the photograph. Its matte finish keeps the grey tones calm, and it sits well on a notebook, a sketchbook or a laptop lid.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/cedar-mountain-va-federal-battery-fording-a-tributary-of-the-rappahannock-on-the-day-of-battle-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal-39244887650820290818-front.webp?v=1790563477
https://thestickerspace.com/products/cedar-mountain-va-federal-battery-fording-a-tributary-of-the-rappahannock-on-the-day-of-battle-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal
