Federal Soldiers Rebuilding the Orange & Alexandria Railroad Bridge Over Cedar Run (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Kiss-Cut Decal

Catlett's Station, Va., Vicinity. Federal Soldiers Rebuilding the Orange & Alexandria Railroad Bridge Over Cedar Run (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Kiss-Cut Decal

A grey-toned wartime scene of Union soldiers rebuilding a timber railroad bridge over Cedar Run near Catlett's Station, Virginia.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is entirely monochrome, moving through light grey, mid grey, charcoal and near black. A timber trestle bridge runs diagonally across the frame, with a stone abutment anchoring one end. Small figures work on the structure, which keeps the human scale of the labour visible. Leafless and leafy trees and the creek below fill the landscape around the bridge. The horizontal frame and the diagonal trestle give the picture its structure, and the soft tonal range reads like a documentary record.

Meaning & Symbolism

The work is attributed to Edwin Forbes (American, 1839–1895), who made field sketches of military life for illustrated magazines. The Orange & Alexandria Railroad was a key supply line in Virginia, which made its bridges targets for destruction and repair alike. The image records the repeated work of rebuilding such infrastructure during the Civil War, dating to 1861–1865, and the labour behind the front lines that kept armies supplied.

Printed on a Sticker's Outline

A kiss-cut sticker is cut around the edge of its artwork, so the trestle and the figures on it set the shape of the piece. In a grey tone, the design reads as a quiet historical scene, one that sits well on a notebook cover or laptop lid where its detail can be seen up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/catletts-station-va-vicinity-federal-soldiers-rebuilding-the-orange-alexandria-railroad-bridge-over-cedar-run-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-31596778722254957055-alt-3.webp?v=1787756254
https://thestickerspace.com/products/catletts-station-va-vicinity-federal-soldiers-rebuilding-the-orange-alexandria-railroad-bridge-over-cedar-run-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
