The focal point is the black depiction of a "zijl," a water lock or sluice, a key element referencing the town's history and name origin. This is displayed within a shield. Above the water lock, a gold (yellow) pile block (a "heiblok," or wooden beam), rests upon a blue background.

Meaning and Symbolism

The design is a clever example of "canting" heraldry, a visual pun playing on the town's name. The block/wooden beam (heiblok) explicitly represents the "blok" portion of Blokzijl, meaning "block." The water lock (zijl) represents the "zijl" portion, meaning "sluice." The overall design therefore visually explains the meaning of "Blokzijl" (blocked sluice or fortified lock), stemming from the town's origins as a settlement around a fortified sluice.

The combination of these elements within the shield reflects the town's history and identity, and is recognized as the official symbol of Blokzijl.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/blokzijl-wapen-hrva-netherlands-coat-of-arms-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-2-inch-white-position1.webp?v=1768301257
https://thestickerspace.com/products/blokzijl-wapen-hrva-netherlands-coat-of-arms-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
