Ditch With Bodies of Soldiers on Right Wing Used as a Rifle Pit by Confederates (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Kiss-Cut Decal

Antietam, Maryland. Ditch With Bodies of Soldiers on Right Wing Used as a Rifle Pit by Confederates (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Kiss-Cut Decal

This design reproduces a black-and-white battlefield photograph of a ditch on the right wing at Antietam, Maryland, where Confederate troops fired from a rifle pit dug into the earth and filled with the dead.

Visual Elements & Composition

The image is built from tonal grey, with light grey sky and ground, mid grey earth, and near-black shadow pooling inside the trench. The trench runs across the lower half of the frame and dominates the composition, its edges broken and uneven where the soil has been thrown up. Figures and debris sit within the cut, while a tree line closes the rolling landscape at the back. A group of standing men in period dress and a rider on horseback appear in the distance, giving scale to the ground in front. The photographic plate's ragged borders remain visible, so the image reads as a document rather than a painting.

Meaning & Symbolism

The ditch is the subject. Confederate defenders used the depression as a firing position during the fighting of 17 September 1862, and the photograph records the aftermath, when the bodies of soldiers lay where they had fallen. The image stands for the way the Antietam landscape itself became part of the battle, with natural contours turned into cover and cover turned into a grave. Alexander Gardner's team made the original photograph in the days after the battle, and it is among the earliest widely circulated images of American war dead.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker follows the outline of its artwork, so the ragged edge of the original plate can be kept as the sticker's own boundary. The scene holds its meaning at close range, where the trench, the figures and the tree line resolve as the photograph's details. Placed on a notebook, a laptop lid or a case, the sticker keeps the photograph's grey palette intact and stands out as a single historical frame.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/antietam-maryland-ditch-with-bodies-of-soldiers-on-right-wing-used-as-a-rifle-pit-by-confederates-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-27265763535696130437-alt-3.webp?v=1787751127
https://thestickerspace.com/products/antietam-maryland-ditch-with-bodies-of-soldiers-on-right-wing-used-as-a-rifle-pit-by-confederates-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
