Opposite him, the diminutive Renard—the iconic trickster fox—stands in a pose of cautious negotiation. The scene is rendered with the characteristic cross-hatching and fine-line technique of a 1650s copperplate engraving, emphasizing the textured interplay between the woodland shadows and the animals' silhouettes. Subtle architectural and naturalistic cues in the background define the council’s clearing, framing the tension between the powerful authority of the Bear and the cunning, opportunistic spirit of the fox.

A Legacy of Fable and Satire

Derived from the rich tradition of European animal fables, this engraving captures a pivotal moment from the Reynard cycle, a series of tales that used animal allegories to satirize the social and political hierarchies of the era. Everdingen’s interpretation bridges the gap between folklore and high art, transforming a simple morality play into a sophisticated study of character. The piece represents the third state of the original four-part series held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, preserving the distinct, sharp draftsmanship of Dutch Golden Age printmaking.

The Sticker Silhouette

By isolating the figures from their original 17th-century context, this kiss-cut sticker allows the intricate linework of the engraving to stand alone as a graphic element. The contour-cut follows the organic shapes of the animals, turning a historical print into a portable, sharp-edged icon that rests flat against your preferred surface, bringing the stoic Bear and the clever Renard into your immediate, tactile space.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/allart-van-everdingen-the-bear-calls-renard-to-appear-before-the-council-of-the-animals-from-hendrick-van-165075-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-LLRVN-2X2-32-front.webp?v=1789222354
https://thestickerspace.com/products/allart-van-everdingen-the-bear-calls-renard-to-appear-before-the-council-of-the-animals-from-hendrick-van-165075-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
