Renard stands at the center of a chaotic, anthropomorphic court, surrounded by a menagerie of accusers and onlookers, each rendered with stark, hatched shading that emphasizes the tension of the scene. The layout utilizes a crowded, theatrical perspective where the characters occupy a cramped, claustrophobic space, forcing the viewer to examine the frantic expressions and stylized postures of the various animals acting as judge, jury, and executioner. The absence of a horizon line keeps the focus entirely on the central drama of the fox caught in his own schemes.

Meaning & Symbolism

Derived from Hendrick van Alcmar’s seminal satire Renard the Fox, this image serves as a brutal critique of power and moral hypocrisy. Renard, a legendary figure in European folklore, represents the anti-hero whose wit often turns against him. By the third state of the original 1650–75 series, the engraving captures the moment where the subversion of social order is checked by the machinery of the state. It is a snapshot of medieval justice translated through the lens of Dutch Golden Age irony.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

The kiss-cut follows the erratic, jagged contours of the engraving’s dense assembly of figures. Because the design is a high-contrast historical print, the crisp outline isolates the narrative intensity of the trial, allowing the chaotic energy of the scene to sit cleanly against your laptop or journal cover. The artwork’s tight, cross-hatched details remain visible at this scale, turning a relic of 17th-century print culture into a distinct, portable graphic that stands out as a sharp, monochromatic statement.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/allart-van-everdingen-renard-is-sentenced-to-death-from-hendrick-van-alcmars-renard-the-fox-165075-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-LLRVN-2X2-16-front.webp?v=1789221759
https://thestickerspace.com/products/allart-van-everdingen-renard-is-sentenced-to-death-from-hendrick-van-alcmars-renard-the-fox-165075-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
