Van Everdingen utilizes dense cross-hatching to define the texture of the fox's fur and the heavy folds of the monk’s cowl, contrasted against the lighter, nervous posture of the rooster. The lines are delicate yet sharp, emphasizing the fox’s devious, sidelong glance and the rooster’s rigid alertness. As a third-state-of-four print from the Met Museum collection, the design retains the gritty, organic quality of the original copperplate engraving, capturing the intricate detail of 17th-century European printmaking techniques.

Meaning & Symbolism

Rooted in the medieval Reynard the Fox cycle, this scene serves as a satirical commentary on moral duplicity and the danger of trusting appearances. The fox, historically a symbol of cunning and vice, adopts the vestments of the church not to repent, but to manipulate the vulnerable. This specific depiction highlights the thin line between predatory intent and performative piety, a recurring theme in Dutch Golden Age art that mocked the hypocrisy of both civil and ecclesiastical figures during the 1650s.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

By extracting the fox and rooster from the original print and following their intricate contours with a kiss-cut edge, the design becomes a standalone icon. The precision of the outline allows this seventeenth-century fable to sit independently on a laptop lid or a journal cover, detached from the frame of the print but retaining its biting, satirical weight. It transforms a classical museum engraving into a sharp, graphic accent that asserts its presence through the fox’s knowing, wicked gaze.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/allart-van-everdingen-renard-disguised-as-a-monk-gains-the-confidence-of-the-rooster-from-hendrick-van-165075-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-LLRVN-2X2-27-front.webp?v=1789222212
https://thestickerspace.com/products/allart-van-everdingen-renard-disguised-as-a-monk-gains-the-confidence-of-the-rooster-from-hendrick-van-165075-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
