Baker - Vive la France, French Style in Broadway - 1840 - STICKER Vinyl Kiss-Cut Decal
Alfred E. Baker - Vive la France, French Style in Broadway - 1840 - Kiss-Cut Sticker Design

This design showcases Alfred E. Baker’s 1840 hand-colored lithograph, a satirical commentary on the Francophilia sweeping through mid-19th-century New York City fashion and social scenes.

Visual Elements & Composition

The composition is anchored by a centrally posed figure draped in elaborate, high-fashion silhouettes that defined the era’s French influence on American taste. The artwork utilizes the precise linework and deliberate shading characteristic of 1840s lithography, with a color palette that emphasizes the delicate, muted tones common to hand-colored prints of the period. The figure’s ornate attire commands the frame, surrounded by balanced, intentional negative space that draws the eye directly to the dramatic flair of the garment’s construction.

Meaning & Symbolism

The print serves as a cultural artifact from the Metropolitan Museum’s collection, capturing the specific anxieties and fascinations of Broadway's social elite during the 1840s. By titling the work "Vive la France," Baker mocks the performative adoption of Parisian aesthetics by New Yorkers, using the figure’s oversized ensemble to embody the absurdity of foreign trend-chasing. It functions as a visual record of a time when the transatlantic flow of ideas dictated the local hierarchy of style and status.

On the Sticker

As a kiss-cut decal, this design is liberated from the constraints of its original rectangular print borders. The custom outline follows the complex silhouette of the figure and their garments, allowing the historical engraving to hover against your chosen surface. Because the cut precisely traces the contours of the artwork, the figure stands out as a singular, portable window into 19th-century Broadway satire.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/alfred-e-baker-vive-la-france-french-style-in-broadway-1840-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-LFRE-2X2-3-front.webp?v=1789220582
https://thestickerspace.com/products/alfred-e-baker-vive-la-france-french-style-in-broadway-1840-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
