The central focus rests on the muscular, contorted figures of the executioners and the stoic, upward gaze of Saint John, who stands centered within a large, steaming vessel. Above the frantic action, a celestial presence occupies the upper quadrant, pulling the viewer’s eye from the terrestrial violence toward the divine intervention represented by the clouds and light emanating from the heavens.

Meaning & Symbolism

Originally commissioned as part of Dürer’s landmark Apocalypse series, this print translates the biblical narrative of persecution into the visual language of the German Renaissance. The boiling oil signifies both the cruelty of the Roman Empire and the ultimate triumph of faith, as John emerges unharmed by the miracle of divine protection. The work serves as a testament to Dürer’s technical prowess in relief printing, capturing the visceral energy of a martyrdom scene while maintaining the precise, elegant linework that defined his contribution to the history of printmaking.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

As a kiss-cut sticker, this intricate woodcut is liberated from its rectangular paper origins, with the blade tracing the complex silhouettes of the executioners and the rim of the cauldron. By following the jagged outlines of the historical illustration, the sticker functions as a portable fragment of the Met Museum archives, allowing the dense, dark energy of Dürer’s lines to stand out sharply against the surface of a laptop or journal cover.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/albrecht-drer-the-martyrdom-of-saint-john-from-the-apocalypse-1511-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-LBRDRR-2X2-531-front.webp?v=1789574375
https://thestickerspace.com/products/albrecht-drer-the-martyrdom-of-saint-john-from-the-apocalypse-1511-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
