Dominating the frame are the gnarled rock formations and dense, intricate cross-hatching that Sadeler used to create depth and texture within the landscape. The figure of St. Francis serves as the focal point, positioned amidst the imposing geological features that pull the eye through a complex play of shadow and light. Because this is a reverse copy, the orientation offers a distinct perspective on the original masterwork’s spatial arrangement, emphasizing the chaotic beauty of the terrain over the calm of the subject.

Meaning & Symbolism

Rooted in the Northern Mannerist tradition, the work reflects the era's fascination with sublime, untamed nature. The stigmatization narrative provides a spiritual anchor to the otherwise overwhelming physical environment. By placing the saint within such a rugged, imposing landscape, the print bridges the gap between religious devotion and the growing 17th-century interest in landscape as a primary subject. It is an expression of the scale of the natural world in relation to the human condition.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

As a kiss-cut decal, the artwork’s intricate linework is preserved by the custom contouring of the sticker’s edge. This design functions as a portable fragment of a classical print collection, allowing the dense, somber tones of Sadeler’s engraving to stand out against the flat surface of a journal cover or laptop. The silhouette follows the jagged profile of the landscape, treating the original print as a precise, die-cut artifact.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/aegidius-sadeler-ii-rocky-landscape-with-the-stigmatization-of-st-francis-reverse-copy-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-GDSSDL-2X2-55-front.webp?v=1789170263
https://thestickerspace.com/products/aegidius-sadeler-ii-rocky-landscape-with-the-stigmatization-of-st-francis-reverse-copy-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
