The composition is split between the immediate, imposing presence of the statue in the foreground and the chaotic, narrative-heavy scene of the emperor’s demise in the distance. The stark contrast between the static, monumental figure and the active, smaller-scale background creates a depth typical of late Renaissance printmaking, where every cross-hatched line serves to ground the figures in a tangible, gravitas-filled space.

Historical Significance

Dating to the late 1580s, this work reflects the era’s fascination with Roman history and the Stoic contemplation of suicide as a final act of political agency. Otho, known for his brief and turbulent reign, is here rendered not merely as a ruler, but as a symbolic study in historical tragedy. The choice to frame the emperor from behind emphasizes the weight of his legacy and the isolation of his decision, transforming a classical figure into a nuanced study of power and inevitable collapse.

On the Sticker

Because this design is rendered as a kiss-cut decal, the complex silhouette of the equestrian figure is isolated from its original page, allowing the engraving to hover against your chosen surface. The contour-hugging cut treats the historical print as a standalone object, separating the dense detail of Collaert’s line work from the surrounding negative space and refocusing the viewer’s attention on the stark, dramatic geometry of the statue itself.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/adriaen-collaert-plate-8-equestrian-statue-of-otho-seen-from-behind-his-death-scene-in-the-background-ca-158789-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-DRNCLL-2X2-36-front.webp?v=1789160931
https://thestickerspace.com/products/adriaen-collaert-plate-8-equestrian-statue-of-otho-seen-from-behind-his-death-scene-in-the-background-ca-158789-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
