Neptune sits regally atop the beast, his posture echoing the fluid lines of the vessel beneath him. The river-god anchors the bottom of the composition, providing a grounding, human element that contrasts with the fantastical, hybrid anatomy of the central monster. Fine line work dominates the visual field, creating a high-contrast aesthetic that relies on density and shadow to give depth to the figures and the surrounding architectural foliage.

Historical Iconography

Originating from a period when European artists were obsessed with the grotesque and the ornamental, this pendant design blurs the line between functional jewelry sketches and imaginative mythology. The inclusion of the river-god and the prominent urn serves as a nod to classical antiquity, reimagined through the lens of late 16th-century printmaking. It represents the era’s fascination with oceanic dominion and the artful manipulation of natural forms, turning the fluid movement of the sea into a static, highly detailed decorative blueprint.

The Sticker Form

By extracting this engraving from the archive, the kiss-cut format allows the intricate, flowing silhouette of the sea monster and Neptune to stand alone against any flat surface. The sharp, precise contouring follows the artist's original line work, turning a centuries-old print into a portable emblem that fits journals, sketchbooks, or laptops with a singular, tailored profile.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/adriaen-collaert-pendant-design-with-a-sea-monster-carrying-neptune-on-an-urn-beside-a-river-god-with-an-1582-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-DRNCLL-2X2-22-front.webp?v=1789160361
https://thestickerspace.com/products/adriaen-collaert-pendant-design-with-a-sea-monster-carrying-neptune-on-an-urn-beside-a-river-god-with-an-1582-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
