A central, undulating sea creature dominates the composition, its serpentine body providing a structural anchor for the bearded, trident-wielding Neptune. Flanking the central motif, two curious, horned figures emerge from symmetrical scrollwork, creating a dense interplay of organic anatomy and ornamental metalwork. The engraving employs fine, layered cross-hatching to delineate the metallic sheen of the jewelry’s frame and the textured scales of the creature, resulting in a stark, high-contrast black-and-white aesthetic that highlights every sharp line of Collaert’s draftsmanship.

Iconography and Origins

Rooted in the Mannerist obsession with grotesque and mythological hybrids, this piece reflects the Renaissance appetite for the exotic and the classical. The presence of Neptune signifies maritime dominion, while the horned figures suggest a subterranean or chthonic counterpoint, typical of the era's fascination with dualities. As a pendant design, this work served as a blueprint for goldsmiths, translating high-art printmaking into functional, wearable opulence during the height of the print-as-ornamental-source era.

On the Sticker

The kiss-cut follows the precise, elaborate perimeter of the pendant’s frame, isolating the engraving’s silhouette from the background. By removing the surrounding negative space, the sticker transforms the original 1582 design into a portable, sculptural element that sits flush against flat surfaces. Its outline accentuates the ornamental scrolls and sharp extremities of the monster, effectively turning a historical print into a modern graphic accessory.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/adriaen-collaert-pendant-design-with-a-sea-monster-carrying-neptune-flanked-by-two-figures-with-horns-1582-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-DRNCLL-2X2-20-front.webp?v=1789160280
https://thestickerspace.com/products/adriaen-collaert-pendant-design-with-a-sea-monster-carrying-neptune-flanked-by-two-figures-with-horns-1582-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
