Collaert utilizes the rigid, ornamental structure of a Renaissance pendant to frame the scene, incorporating elaborate scrollwork, leaf motifs, and hanging pearls that bleed into the background. The engraving relies on dense, rhythmic hatching to define the volume of the fish and the delicate drapery of the angel’s robes, creating a high-contrast aesthetic that emphasizes the metallic, jeweler-crafted nature of the original source.

Historical Iconography

Dating to 1582, this work represents the Flemish Northern Renaissance obsession with combining biblical storytelling and decorative arts. The iconography draws from the Book of Tobit, where the fish serves as a miraculous vehicle for healing and protection. By presenting this scene as a pendant design, Collaert elevates a spiritual narrative into a functional, luxury object, blurring the lines between a devotional print and a goldsmith’s blueprint. It captures a moment where printmaking functioned as a design sourcebook for artisans of the era.

On the Sticker

The kiss-cut format allows this complex, ornate engraving to exist as a standalone silhouette, removing the rectangular borders of the original paper print. By contouring directly to the edges of the pendant design, the sticker functions as a portable, flattened relic. The precise outline isolates the intricate metalwork and the swirling, dynamic figures, effectively transforming a centuries-old technical drawing into a sharp, graphic accent for flat surfaces.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/adriaen-collaert-pendant-design-with-a-fish-carrying-tobias-and-the-angel-1582-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-DRNCLL-2X2-18-front.webp?v=1789160194
https://thestickerspace.com/products/adriaen-collaert-pendant-design-with-a-fish-carrying-tobias-and-the-angel-1582-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
