Surrounding this central medallion is a dense, symmetrical frame characteristic of the Northern Mannerist style. Intricate scrollwork, mythological creatures, and hybrid forms weave through the borders, creating a high-contrast interplay between the open, oceanic space of the center and the ornate, cluttered geometry of the surrounding frame. The fine lines of the original print are preserved here, maintaining the precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques that define the depth and volume of the figures.

The Mannerist Aesthetic

Hailing from the late 16th century, this piece is part of a larger series depicting the Judgment of Paris, showcasing the era’s fascination with classical mythology and the "grotesque" style—a decorative art form inspired by the discovery of ancient Roman wall paintings. Collaert’s work bridges the gap between scientific observation and fantasy, with the framing elements serving to contain the wild, fluid energy of the deity. It is a snapshot of Renaissance-era print culture, where architectural structure met the untamed chaos of the pantheon.

Formed to the Outline

The kiss-cut format allows this architectural print to break free from the traditional rectangular constraints of a paper engraving. By following the silhouette of the frame itself, the sticker emphasizes the intricate, jagged edges of the grotesque border, turning a 16th-century print into a precise, tactile object. The design functions as a standalone graphic element, ready to be placed on flat, dry surfaces like journals or notebooks where the complexity of the engraving can be examined at close range.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/adriaen-collaert-neptune-in-a-decorative-frame-with-grotesques-from-the-judgment-of-paris-ca-15801600-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-DRNCLL-2X2-15-front.webp?v=1789160108
https://thestickerspace.com/products/adriaen-collaert-neptune-in-a-decorative-frame-with-grotesques-from-the-judgment-of-paris-ca-15801600-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
