Perelle utilizes a high horizon line to display the sprawling network of hedges, fountains, and circular basins, known as the Demie Lune. The engraving relies on fine, cross-hatched lines to delineate the depth of the terrain and the height of the surrounding groves, while the sky remains largely unadorned to prevent distraction from the complex, mathematical arrangement of the earth below.

Historical Context

This print serves as a document of the formal French garden movement, where nature was treated as an extension of architecture and authority. The design reflects the mid-17th-century obsession with order and human dominion over the landscape. By focusing on the grand parterre, Perelle highlights the status of the Richelieu estate, transforming a private leisure space into a public demonstration of power and refined taste. It is an artifact of the Baroque era’s fascination with permanence and spatial control.

The Artwork as a Sticker

Because this design is rendered as a kiss-cut sticker, the complex silhouette of the gardens is isolated from the original paper margins of the print. The intricate, web-like layout of the parterres creates a dense, patterned aesthetic that functions as a miniature map when applied to a laptop, notebook cover, or journal. By stripping away the frame and placing the garden geometry directly onto a surface, the etching loses its archival distance and becomes a distinct, graphic object that emphasizes the sharp, artificial beauty of 17th-century garden planning.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/adam-perelle-vee-du-grand-parterre-et-de-la-demie-lune-de-richelieu-17th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-DMPRL-2X2-10-front_9d3ff138-62f2-4891-b2a3-91040105bbe9.webp?v=1789155411
https://thestickerspace.com/products/adam-perelle-vee-du-grand-parterre-et-de-la-demie-lune-de-richelieu-17th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
