Volck utilizes stark, high-contrast linework characteristic of 19th-century etching, emphasizing the jagged, ruinous shapes of the vessels against the expansive, bleak horizon. There is a palpable tension in the sparse, ink-heavy details, focusing the viewer’s eye on the mechanical precision of the blockade rather than the surrounding landscape.

Meaning & Symbolism

Born from Volck’s Confederate War Etchings, this piece serves as a pointed piece of pro-Confederate propaganda produced by a German-born silversmith and dentist living in Baltimore. The image serves as an indictment of the Union's "Anaconda Plan," framing the strategic sinking of the stone-laden ships not as a standard military maneuver, but as an act of calculated maritime destruction. It captures the desperation and bitterness of the era, reflecting the artist's intense partisan loyalty through the lens of mid-19th-century printmaking.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

The kiss-cut follows the erratic, jagged contours of the sinking ships and the disturbed water, allowing the stark, monochromatic etching to stand as a singular silhouette. By isolating the central naval conflict from the original sheet of paper, the sticker format transforms a historical print into a portable, high-contrast graphic that adheres cleanly to flat surfaces like journals or laptop covers, placing the grit of 1860s propaganda directly into your field of view.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/adalbert-john-volck-stone-blockade-off-charleston-south-carolina-from-confederate-war-etchings-186163-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-DLBJHN-2X2-24-front.webp?v=1789154889
https://thestickerspace.com/products/adalbert-john-volck-stone-blockade-off-charleston-south-carolina-from-confederate-war-etchings-186163-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
