The two figures stand in high-contrast profile, their ornate plumes, wide-brimmed hats, and heavy cloaks rendered with sharp, deliberate lines that emphasize the weight of their weaponry and the bravado of their stances. The composition relies on the interplay of negative space against the intricate, calligraphic detail of the period’s civilian-military fashion, creating a sense of immediate, grounded movement.

Historical Context and Significance

These figures are drawn from the mid-to-late 17th-century series Les Gardes Françaises, a body of work that serves as both a fashion plate and a social document of the era. The marauders represent the intersection of military authority and criminal subversion common in the volatile urban landscapes of the period. Bosse, known for his meticulous documentation of Parisian life, imbues these men with a complex duality; they occupy the space between official state power and the lawless grit of the barracks, acting as a window into the stratified reality of the Ancien Régime.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

The kiss-cut follows the precise contours of the soldiers’ silhouettes, isolating these historical figures from their original printed page. By removing the extraneous background, the design focuses the viewer's eye entirely on the expressive, angular interplay of the two men. This format allows the intricate linework of the etching to pop when applied to the surface of a laptop or journal, turning a static piece of art historical record into a mobile, sharp-edged graphic.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/abraham-bosse-two-marauders-from-the-french-guards-les-gardes-franaises-mid-to-late-17th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-BRHBSS-2X2-222-front.webp?v=1789170908
https://thestickerspace.com/products/abraham-bosse-two-marauders-from-the-french-guards-les-gardes-franaises-mid-to-late-17th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
