The Prodigal Son occupies the center of the frame, his posture slumped in a posture of resignation that contrasts with the agitated, rounded forms of the pigs surrounding him. Sparse vegetation and a glimpse of a distant, structured landscape establish the rural setting, while the interplay of light and shadow creates a gritty, tactile sense of the mire. The artist utilizes dense line work to emphasize the texture of the boy’s tattered garments against the rough hides of the animals.

Iconography and Historical Context

This work serves as a stark moralizing narrative from the New Testament, illustrating the nadir of the son's journey before his eventual repentance and return. During the 1630s, Bosse often turned to such scenes to explore themes of social hierarchy and moral instruction, rendering complex theological parables through the lens of everyday realism. The swine act as visual shorthand for the character's degraded state, representing his descent into vanity and subsequent poverty within a society that valued order and piety.

On the Sticker

The kiss-cut application isolates this intricate etching from the dense, historical paper of its origin. By stripping away the surrounding margins, the sticker frames the figure of the son as an independent, portable icon. It brings the precision of a seventeenth-century copperplate print directly onto the surfaces of your journals or laptop covers, letting the fine, deliberate lines of the etching stand out against any flat, solid background.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/abraham-bosse-the-prodigal-son-guarding-pigs-lenfant-prodigue-garde-les-cochons-ca-1636-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-BRHBSS-2X2-185-front.webp?v=1789152505
https://thestickerspace.com/products/abraham-bosse-the-prodigal-son-guarding-pigs-lenfant-prodigue-garde-les-cochons-ca-1636-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
