Bloemaert’s mastery of the etching needle is evident in the expressive, swirling drapery and the sharp, jagged marks that define the rocky enclosure. The scene is anchored by the vertical authority of Christ, whose outstretched arm serves as the visual pivot point, drawing the eye toward the swaddled, awakening form of Lazarus. The background fades into a web of hatching, creating a sense of deep, claustrophobic space that emphasizes the sudden intrusion of divine light into the darkness.

Historical Weight and Context

Originating from the Dutch Golden Age, this print reflects the era's fascination with chiaroscuro and human emotion. The figure of Lazarus acts as the bridge between life and death, his bewildered posture serving as a testament to the miraculous. Bloemaert, a foundational teacher of the Utrecht school, uses the narrative of the Raising of Lazarus to explore the theatrical potential of religious subjects, turning a moment of theological significance into a study of atmospheric intensity and monumental human gesture.

A Miniature Resurrection

Because this kiss-cut design follows the irregular contours of the engraving, the image is liberated from the constraints of a traditional rectangular frame. The jagged edge of the sticker mirrors the rough-hewn aesthetic of the original etching, allowing the chaotic, high-contrast imagery to sit directly against your journal cover or laptop surface as if it were a reclaimed fragment of a centuries-old plate.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/abraham-bloemaert-raising-of-lazarus-reverse-copy-nd-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-BRHBLM-2X2-13RMA-front.webp?v=1789146153
https://thestickerspace.com/products/abraham-bloemaert-raising-of-lazarus-reverse-copy-nd-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
