The figure's tall fur hat and dark brown beard sit at the top of the composition, while a pink striped robe and flesh-tan skin carry the lower half. Sky blue and salmon pink supply the background and robe colour, and gold accents mark the frame. The word TARTARY. is set as the only text, anchoring the image to its name. The chromolithograph method gives the colours flat, saturated fields that read clearly at a glance.

Meaning & Symbolism

The T181 Races of Mankind series belongs to the late nineteenth-century fascination with ethnography, when commercial printers treated human variety as a subject for classification. Each card paired a stereotyped portrait with a regional name, and the fur hat and striped robe function as shorthand for a people the viewer was expected to know only through such images. Abdul Cigarettes distributed the series with its tobacco, so the card doubled as an educational collectible and a promotional incentive. It records how colonial-era knowledge and advertising reached the same consumer audience.

Why It Suits a Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its own design, so the bearded figure and the frame edge become the shape of the object itself. The card's vertical format carries over directly, and the portrait can be placed where a trade card would have been kept: in a journal, on a notebook, or on a collector's surface where it is seen up close. The illustration's small-scale detail reads well at sticker size, and the printed TARTARY. label stays legible as part of the cut.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/abdul-cigarettes-tartary-from-the-races-of-mankind-series-t181-issued-by-abdul-cigarettes-1881-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-BDLCGR-2X2-87-front.webp?v=1789145236
https://thestickerspace.com/products/abdul-cigarettes-tartary-from-the-races-of-mankind-series-t181-issued-by-abdul-cigarettes-1881-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
