The composition balances intricate costume detail with a rigid, illustrative structure typical of the T181 series. Bold blocks of color and precise line work dominate the frame, emphasizing the graphic conventions used in tobacco marketing of the era to capture consumer attention through exoticism and aesthetic order. The layout maintains a tight, vertical focus, ensuring the figure remains the primary anchor against the composition's decorative backdrop.

Meaning & Symbolism

Issued by Abdul Cigarettes, this print serves as a relic of Victorian-era "collectible" marketing, where ethnographic imagery—often romanticized or generalized—was repurposed to build brand loyalty. The "Races of Mankind" series functioned as a bridge between the era’s burgeoning interest in global geography and the aggressive expansion of the commercial tobacco trade. By packaging these lithographs as trade cards, the company turned mundane cigarette packaging into a curated visual archive, reflecting how 19th-century culture commodified international identity to create a sense of worldly sophistication for the average smoker.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

The kiss-cut format isolates the lithograph from its original trade-card context, allowing the ornate silhouette of the Swiss figure to stand alone as a graphic element. Freed from the borders of the original 1881 paper print, the artwork functions as a modular decal, ready to be applied to a laptop lid, notebook, or flat workspace surface where its historical intensity can be viewed up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/abdul-cigarettes-switzerland-from-the-races-of-mankind-series-t181-issued-by-abdul-cigarettes-1881-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-BDLCGR-2X2-86-front.webp?v=1789143914
https://thestickerspace.com/products/abdul-cigarettes-switzerland-from-the-races-of-mankind-series-t181-issued-by-abdul-cigarettes-1881-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
