Rich, saturated tones define the subject’s traditional attire and local flora, set against a structured background typical of Victorian-era collectible trade cards. The composition balances high-contrast portraiture with the ornate typography and graphic borders synonymous with the branding strategies of early cigarette manufacturers.

Meaning & Symbolism

Issued by Abdul Cigarettes during a period of intense global trade and colonial expansion, this piece functions as a relic of 19th-century "races of the world" collector culture. These cards served as both advertising and educational curiosities, providing late-Victorian consumers with exoticized glimpses of distant Pacific cultures. The image acts as a snapshot of how nineteenth-century marketing categorized human diversity through the lens of commercial illustration, turning ethnographic imagery into a prized commodity for the era's avid card collectors.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

As a kiss-cut decal, this intricate historical lithograph is liberated from its original rectangular trade-card constraints. The custom outline follows the specific contours of the figure and its surrounding ornamental elements, allowing the complex detail of the 1881 print to stand out against the surface of a laptop or journal. By removing the traditional trade-card border, the design functions as a singular, bold graphic, transforming a century-old marketing artifact into a sharp, modern accent.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/abdul-cigarettes-hawaii-from-the-races-of-mankind-series-t181-issued-by-abdul-cigarettes-1881-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-BDLCGR-2X2-44-front.webp?v=1789131847
https://thestickerspace.com/products/abdul-cigarettes-hawaii-from-the-races-of-mankind-series-t181-issued-by-abdul-cigarettes-1881-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
