Defehrt - The Little Schoolmistress - mid to late 18th century - STICKER Vinyl Kiss-Cut Decal
A. J. Defehrt - The Little Schoolmistress - Kiss-Cut Sticker Design

This design features a faithful reproduction of A. J. Defehrt’s 18th-century engraving, depicting a young girl poised in a moment of structured, scholarly instruction.

Composition & Engraving Style

The artwork utilizes the fine, rhythmic linework characteristic of mid-to-late 18th-century printmaking, prioritizing high-contrast monochromatic detail over broad tonal washes. The central figure dominates the frame, rendered with delicate cross-hatching that defines the folds of her period-accurate dress and the texture of the open text before her. The composition relies on verticality and formal balance, typical of the era's educational portraiture, ensuring that the reader’s gaze is drawn immediately to the interaction between the subject and her book.

Historical Context & Significance

As a work sourced from the archives of the Met Museum, this piece captures the intellectual rigor and social expectations of Enlightenment-era childhood. Defehrt’s engraving serves as a historical document of instructional culture, immortalizing the serious, studious archetype that was central to 18th-century academic portraiture. The image transcends simple illustration, functioning as a window into the evolution of pedagogical tools and the evolving representation of literacy in pre-revolutionary France.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

By isolating the figure from the traditional margins of a paper print, the kiss-cut format allows this historical engraving to exist as a modern, standalone silhouette. The contour-cut edges bring the delicate linework of Defehrt’s needle directly onto the surfaces of your choosing, transforming a static archive image into a tactile object that follows the unique shape of the engraving. It sits cleanly against flat surfaces, reclaiming the 18th-century subject for contemporary curation.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/a-j-defehrt-the-little-schoolmistress-mid-to-late-18th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-AJ-2X2-13RJ8-front.webp?v=1789121227
https://thestickerspace.com/products/a-j-defehrt-the-little-schoolmistress-mid-to-late-18th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
