Rows of woven wicker baskets and packed earth form a low embankment across the lower half of the frame, and the men stand along its top against a pale sky. The horizontal lines of the earthworks dominate, and the woven basket texture gives the surface a strong, tactile pattern.

Meaning & Symbolism

Gabions were cylindrical baskets filled with earth or stone, and armies used them to build fortifications quickly. The scene belongs to the Siege of Petersburg, which ran from June 1864 to April 1865. Along the lines around Petersburg, control of the rail and supply routes leading to Richmond was decided by such improvised defences, and the soldiers standing on them show the endless work of digging, holding and watching that marked the campaign.

Where the Die-Cut Shape Meets the Earthworks

A die-cut sticker is trimmed to the outline of the artwork, so the line of the embankment and the figures can form the edge of the decal once applied. The matte surface keeps the sepia tones and woven texture easy to read on a smooth flat surface.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/a-group-of-soldiers-stand-on-gabions-used-as-fortifications-near-petersburg-virginia-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal-17433105035792402376-front.webp?v=1790577681
https://thestickerspace.com/products/a-group-of-soldiers-stand-on-gabions-used-as-fortifications-near-petersburg-virginia-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal
