One figure holds a rifle upright, giving the scene its clearest point of focus. Warm sepia dominates, lifted by pale cream highlights and grounded by dark brown shadows, with a faint grey-blue cast in the distance. The tones give the whole camp an aged, documentary look, as if the picture were taken from a worn album page.

Meaning & Symbolism

The 22nd New York State Militia was a volunteer unit of the Union Army, raised in New York State during the opening phase of the American Civil War. Harpers Ferry was a major railroad and armory hub, so units posted there were placed on one of the most strategically contested sites of the early war. The photograph records the everyday business of that moment: the uniforms, the tents and the weapons of citizen-soldiers readying themselves before the large battles that followed.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker keeps its backing intact and is trimmed to the shape of the design, so the group of soldiers and their tents can be cut around the figures to stand clear of the background. The sepia tones suit a journal, a sketchbook or the lid of a case, flat surfaces where the photograph can be seen up close. The design is made for indoor display, and it works best for collectors of Civil War imagery who want a piece of the period on a desk or shelf.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/22d-new-york-state-militia-near-harpers-ferry-va-1861-ie18622-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-15701536185073138293-alt-3.webp?v=1787749295
https://thestickerspace.com/products/22d-new-york-state-militia-near-harpers-ferry-va-1861-ie18622-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
