Dark brown anchors the shadows in the soldiers' coats and the foreground. A muted grey-green appears in the grass and undergrowth, giving the field its quiet, worn look. The composition is built around two standing soldiers in forage caps, each holding a rifle with a fixed bayonet. Behind and beside them sit wooden artillery wagon wheels, their spokes forming circles that echo one another across the frame. A fallen log lies in the lower field, grounding the scene. A small mark reading B888 sits within the image, and the regiment, location and years are named in the title as 1861 and 1862.

Meaning & Symbolism

The image records a moment of field service in the early years of the American Civil War. The 22nd New York State Militia was among the New York regiments sent into the Harpers Ferry area, a town at the meeting of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers whose bridges and rail lines made it a contested point for both armies. The wagon wheels stand for the supply and artillery that moved through such positions, while the rifles and bayonets show the soldiers as men on active duty rather than in camp. The albumen-style treatment reflects the photographic process of the 1860s, when the glass-plate and paper print defined how the war was seen at home.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the photograph's framing, soldiers and wheel shapes can be cut close to the image rather than sitting inside a square. The design rewards a close look: the faces under the forage caps, the bayonets catching light, and the wheel spokes read best at arm's length, where the sepia tones and fine detail of the original print come through clearly.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/22d-new-york-state-militia-near-harpers-ferry-va-1861-ie1862-023-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-57730264704158489238-alt-3.webp?v=1787748964
https://thestickerspace.com/products/22d-new-york-state-militia-near-harpers-ferry-va-1861-ie1862-023-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
