The standing soldier is the focal point, set just left of centre, with the tall A-frame tent filling the background. Wooden crates and a camp stool sit around the foot of the tent and give the scene its working, unposed feel. The composition is simple and documentary, with the figure, the tent and the equipment all readable at once.

Meaning & Symbolism

The photograph records the 22nd New York State Militia during its deployment near Harpers Ferry in the period 1861 to 1862. Militia units of this kind were raised by the states in the first years of the American Civil War, and camp scenes like this one show the everyday conditions of that service. The image is a historical document of one unit's presence in the Harpers Ferry area rather than a symbolic composition.

A Camp Scene on a Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker follows the outline of the image, so the sepia print can be trimmed to the soldier and tent or left as a full rectangle, depending on the cut. It suits a journal, a sketchbook or a laptop lid where a single period photograph is the focus. The soft tones hold their character at a small size, so the detail of the uniform and camp stays visible.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/22d-new-york-state-militia-near-harpers-ferry-va-1861-ie1862-022-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-19797489906754209982-alt-3.webp?v=1787748997
https://thestickerspace.com/products/22d-new-york-state-militia-near-harpers-ferry-va-1861-ie1862-022-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
