A thin grey-blue border frames the print. Three seated soldiers in caps occupy the centre, a triangular canvas tent rises behind them, and a wooden crate sits in the foreground. The stillness of the scene and the small caption-like number at the base give the piece a documentary character.

Meaning & Symbolism

The photograph records ordinary camp life of a New York militia unit in the early 1860s, the period when units were stationed around Harpers Ferry, a strategically important town on the Potomac. The cards, the tent and the crate show the routine of waiting and provisioning that filled much of a soldier's day, as opposed to combat. It is a visual record of the American Civil War era.

How the Kiss-Cut Holds the Print

A kiss-cut sticker follows the outline of the print and leaves the backing whole, so the image is peeled and placed by hand. Its sepia tones suit a flat, smooth surface such as a laptop lid, a journal cover or a window, where the three figures can be seen close up.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/22d-new-york-state-militia-near-harpers-ferry-va-1861-ie1862-008-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-15383395637418767769-alt-3.webp?v=1787748796
https://thestickerspace.com/products/22d-new-york-state-militia-near-harpers-ferry-va-1861-ie1862-008-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
