Two soldiers sit at the entrance of a canvas wall tent, and stacked ammunition crates sit close by, with the word CARTRIDGE visible on the crates. A brick building stands in the background. The horizontal composition spreads the camp across the frame, so the tent, the men and the crates are read together as a single encampment.

Meaning & Symbolism

The photograph records a militia unit at the place where the fighting over Harpers Ferry took place. The 22nd New York State Militia belonged to the Union army's volunteer forces, and the crates and tent show the everyday business of supply and camp life. The image is a direct record of a particular regiment in a particular place, dated to 1861 and corrected to 1862 in the catalogue record.

Cut to the Camp

A kiss-cut sticker follows the outline of the photograph, so the tent, the crates and the seated soldiers can be applied with the edges of the image cut back. The warm sepia tones suit a sticker meant for close viewing, on a notebook, a journal or the lid of a laptop.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/22d-new-york-state-militia-near-harpers-ferry-va-1861-ie1862-004-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-18613466314667766693-alt-3.webp?v=1787748596
https://thestickerspace.com/products/22d-new-york-state-militia-near-harpers-ferry-va-1861-ie1862-004-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
