The soldier is the single vertical figure, set against the broad horizontal of the field and the mountain behind him. His kepi cap and the rifle with its fixed bayonet are the sharpest details, so they read first. The tonal range is soft and even, the way an albumen print of the period looks, and there is no border or lettering to break the scene.

Meaning & Symbolism

The title names the 22nd New York State Militia and places it near Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in 1861 and 1862. Harpers Ferry sat at the junction of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, and control of the town changed hands several times during the war. The figure stands for the volunteer infantry that made up much of the early Union force, and the image records one unit's presence in a landscape that was contested ground.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker follows the outline of its artwork, so the soldier and the ridge keep their own edge once the backing is peeled away. The glossy finish brings out the warm tones of the print. The sticker suits a flat surface where a small historical scene can be seen up close, such as the cover of a journal or the inside of a binder.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/22d-new-york-state-militia-near-harpers-ferry-va-1861-ie1862-002-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-73094607470181991649-alt-3.webp?v=1787748660
https://thestickerspace.com/products/22d-new-york-state-militia-near-harpers-ferry-va-1861-ie1862-002-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
